Ik begon op mijn 27e met saxofoonspelen. Na 19 jaar klarinet spelen in een harmonieorkest wist ik na het bijwonen van een optreden van Hans Dulfer: dat wil ik ook! Eind 1987 kocht ik een altsax en hoewel ik nog niets van jazz en improvisatie wist, begon ik begin 1988 direct een instrumentale band te formeren en op te treden. Al snel ruilde ik de alt in voor een tenorsax en tien jaar later werd ik fulltime saxofonist nadat ik mijn baan bij Akzo Nobel opzegde. Inmiddels ben ik druk bezet in zowel de jazz-, dance- als party scenes en heb ik meerdere albums en losse nummers uitgebracht.
I started playing saxophone at the age of 27. After playing clarinet for 19 years in an orchestra, I attended a performance of Dutch saxophone hero Hans Dulfer. I then instantly knew I wanted to play saxophone too! At the end of 1987 I bought an alto sax, and although I didn't know anything about jazz and improvisation, I started an instrumental band in 1988 and began performing. Soon I swapped the alto for a tenor sax and ten years later I became a fulltime sax player after quitting my job at Akzo Nobel. Today I am a busy in the jazz- dance- and party scenes and released a number of albums and single tracks.
VEELZIJDIG EN ACTUEEL
Ik houd van heel veel muziekstijlen. Muziek uit het verleden en muziek van nu is voor mij onlosmakelijk met elkaar verbonden, maar met mijn band wil ik wel zoveel mogelijk 'in het nu' zijn en dat doe ik door de actuele popmuziek altijd in mijn optredens te integreren. Alleen zo houd je naar mijn mening de jazz interessant voor het grotere publiek. Het maakt voor mij geen verschil of ik met mijn akoestische quartet in een café speel, met mijn band op een festival of met een DJ op een feest. Ik zal altijd 100% geven om het optreden tot een succes te maken. Als resultaat van mijn brede interesse in muziekstijlen vind je op Spotify en andere muziekplatforms veel verschillende opnames. Het zit dus niet in mijn aard me te specialiseren in één genre. Wel streef ik naar een eigen saxofoonsound en benader ik muziek op mijn manier. Ik gebruik voor mijn jazzimprovisaties vele stijlen zoals funk, dance, rock, blues, rock & roll, soul, calypso, afrobeat, latin, traditionele swing en pop. All die stijlen bij elkaar vormden uiteindelijk mijn manier van spelen en mijn persoonlijke saxofoongeluid dat geinspireerd is op de sounds van de grootmeesters van weleer (zoals Arnett Cobb, Willis Jackson en Illinois Jacquet). Hun geluid is onmiskenbaar van invloed op mijn spel in hedendaagse DJ dance muziek. Hans Dulfer liet mij met zijn legendarische VPRO-radioprogramma 'In The Midnight Hour' kennismaken met het grote geluid van deze saxofonisten. Ook de Nederlandse saxofonisten Boris van der Lek en Rinus Groeneveld zijn voor mij zeer inspirerend geweest om me te ontwikkelen als tenorsaxofonist
VERSATILE AND UP-TO-DATE
I love many musical styles. Music from the past and music today, for me it is all connected. However, with my band I want to be as much as possible in the present time and I do this by always integrating the latest pop music in my performances. I think this is the way to grab the attention of people that normally wouldn't listen to jazz. It makes no difference whether I play with my acoustic quartet in a cafe, with my band at a festival or with a DJ at a dance party. I will always give 100% to make the performance a success. As a result of my broad view on music you can find many different recordings on Spotify and other platforms. For instance, compare this track with this one.
So, it's not in my nature to specialize in only one musical genre. However, I do specialize in something, I work hard for a personal saxophone sound and developed my own musical approach. For my jazz improvisation I use many styles like funk, dance, rock, blues, rock & roll, soul, calypso, afrobeat, latin, traditional swing and pop music. Playing all those styles shaped my way of playing and my personal saxophone sound that is inspired by the styles of the sax greats of the past (like Arnett Cobb, Willis Jackson and Illinois Jacquet). Their sounds still influence my playing on today's DJ dance music. Hans Dulfer put me on track of the sounds of these giants, through his legendary VPRO-radio show 'In the Midnight Hour'. Furthermore the Dutch saxophonists Boris van der Lek and Rinus Groeneveld have inspired me to become the saxophonist that I am now.
BANDLEIDER
Ik ben bandleider van 3 formaties: een festivalband, een akoestische jazz quartet en samen met tenorsaxofonist Olaf Hoeks, bandleider van het swing, bebop, rhythm & blues quintet 'Swang Thang'. Eind 2023 kwam het eerste album uit op CD.

Naast de optredens met mijn bands treed ik op in combinatie met pop/dancemuziek en DJ's. Ik speel op dance feesten, festivals, evenementen en privefeesten. Daar doe ik net als met mijn bands wat ik het beste kan: improviseren.

Next to the performances with my bands I perform in combination with pop/dance music and DJ's. I perform at dance parties, festivals, events and private parties. In this scene I also do what I do in my bands - and what I do best: improvise.

Ik heb tot nu toe 8 albums op mijn naam staan en werkte mee aan diverse albums van anderen. Op zowel mijn eerste - voor die tijd vooruitstrevende - album 'Blow Job' (Kiers & de Vries 1998) als het ballad-album Moodprints (2015) staan gastbijdragen van mijn eerste inspirator Hans Dulfer. Naast albums neem ik ook singles op en losse tracks met house/dance-producers, zoals deze Hanna Saxtimes Mix.

RELEASED RECORDINGS
Until now I released 8 albums under my name and contributed to various albums of others. Both my first - at that time very progressive - album 'Blow Job' (Kiers & De Vries 1998) and the ballad album Moodprints (2015), contain a guest appearance of my Dutch sax guru Hans Dulfer. Next to album recordings I also recorded singles and tracks with house/dance music producers, like Hanna Saxtimes Mix.
Since 2019 I also compose and produce dance tracks myself under the alias 'Soulax'. For an overview of all released music see the Music page.
